Short building projects with the Brooklyn Street Neighborhood Alliance will be announced during the summer.
Building project, West Shaft Road, North Adams
Our project was completed in late-May, except for some landscaping work and our homeowner has moved in.
Work progress mid-February through May:
Our volunteers put in a lot of extra hours during these last months to finish the project and have the home ready for move in. Painting and staining, installing doors, kitchen cabinets, wood laminate and tile floors, completing the vinyl siding and all the many final details.
Work progress in January through mid-February:
Upstairs bedrooms and half bath are painted, doors and trim are being installed. Priming and painting continues in the stairwell and downstairs. First floor bathtub and surround have been installed. Subfloors upstairs and down have been installed. The McCann carpentry class installed insulation and sheetrock in basement.
Work progress in November and December:
We have completed the front and side porches, installed soffits on north and south eaves and installed siding on east side up to the eaves - waiting on electrical work before we can complete siding on the gable. New roofing was installed and the new dormer exterior completed. The heating was installed and we are working primarily inside on new and patched sheetrock, painting, installing subfloors, interior doors and trim and waterproofing basement walls.
Work progress for September and October:
We have vinyl siding done on three sides of the house. We installed new exterior doors and continued work on the front and side porches, installing steps, deck, rails and spindles. We framed the second floor closets, cut open the roof and framed a new dormer and started interior painting.
Work progress for August:
We started installing vinyl siding, installed a new hatchway cover and continued work on front and side porches. Students groups from RPI, MCLA and Williams joined us for workdays.
Work progress for June and July:
We installed new windows, did a lot of drywall patching, taping and mudding, framed walls on both sides of basement stairwell, repaired water damaged areas around front and side entrances, dug holes and poured footings, and began framing front and side porches.
Work progress for May:
Many thanks to the Williams College WAI leaders and the St. Elizabeth's youth group, as well as to our regular Wednesday and Saturday volunteers. We removed sheetrock and insulation in second floor half bath, removed windows, installed a new Typar barrier and began water-sealing window frames for new window installation.
Work progress for April:
Many thanks to the MCLA women's volleyball team for brush cleanup and kitchen cabinent removal on April 9 and vinyl siding removal on April 30. Thanks also to Williams and MCLA student groups and the Wednesday crew for brushwork, removal of window and door trim and linoleum, demolition of framing in basement; and general cleanup.
New Building Project starting April 9
We will be renovating a home in North Adams, 813 West Shaft Road. Any groups or individuals interested in volunteering, contact the NBHfH office at firstname.lastname@example.org or 664-4440.
We will be starting with cleanup, inside and out, then gutting bath and kitchen, adding a shed dormer on the east side for a half bath and bedroom closets, re-building two outside steps.
This should be a short project, then we plan to move on to a new build in Adams. We currently have future projects pending in Adams (possibly two new builds), and in Williamstown (possibly two new builds). We will post information on new projects as soon as they become active.
